My Top 10 Horror Movie Challenge

October 1st, 2011 Posted in Uncategorized | No Comments »

In the spirit (no pun intended) of Halloween, I’ve decided to make a list of my Top 10 favorite horror movies. I know the first thing you’re going to say is, “Where is The Exorcist? Or Amityville? Or Nightmare on Elmstreet? Or Hellraiser? Or…” but thing is, this is MY list and I’m limiting myself to 10. While those are all great films, I just couldn’t fit them in. You may notice a lot of these are pretty campy. In fact… I wanted to include Army of Darkness, but of the trilogy, it’s not my favorite so I bumped it to fit in another.

Anyway – here’s the list complete with a summary stolen from IMDB. My challenge to you is to watch all of this list before Halloween, or at the very least watch whichever you haven’t already seen, if any. Enjoy!

10. Halloween (1978)

A psychotic murderer institutionalized since childhood escapes on a mindless rampage while his doctor chases him through the streets.

9. Poltergeist (1982)

A family’s home is haunted by a host of ghosts.

8. The Texas Chainsaw Massacre (1974)

Five friends visiting their grandpa’s old house are hunted down and terrorized by a chainsaw wielding killer and his family of grave-robbing cannibals.

7. House (1986)

Roger Cobb is a Vietnam vet. Whose career as a horror novelist has taken a turn for the worse when his son Jimmy mysteriously disappears while visiting his aunt’s house. Roger’s search for Jimmy destroys his marriage and his writing career. The sudden death of his aunt brings Roger back to the house where his nightmares began.

6. House on Haunted Hill (1959)

Eccentric millionaire Fredrick Loren and his 4th wife, Annabelle, have invited 5 people to the house on Haunted Hill for a “haunted House” party. Whoever will stay in the house for one night will earn ten thousand dollars each. As the night progresses, all the guests are trapped inside the house with ghosts, murderers, and other terrors.

5. Bubba Ho-Tep (2002)

Elvis and JFK, both alive and in nursing homes, fight for the souls of their fellow residents as they battle an ancient Egyptian Mummy.

4. Evil Dead II (1987)

The lone survivor of an onslaught of flesh-possessing spirits holds up in a cabin with a group of strangers while the demons continue their attack.

3. Dawn of the Dead (1978)

Following an ever-growing epidemic of zombies that have risen from the dead, two Philadelphia SWAT team members, a traffic reporter, and his television-executive girlfriend seek refuge in a secluded shopping mall.

2. Evil Dead (1981)

Five friends travel to a cabin in the woods, where they unknowingly release flesh-possessing demons.

1. Dead Alive (1992)

A young man’s mother is bitten by a Sumatran rat-monkey. She gets sick and dies, at which time she comes back to life, killing and eating dogs, nurses, friends, and neighbors.

And… an honorable mention because my wife and I love to watch this movie every Halloween.

Murder By Death (1976)

Five famous literary detective characters and their sidekicks are invited to a bizarre mansion to solve an even stranger mystery.

Why We Use WordPress For A CMS

April 12th, 2011 Posted in Uncategorized | 1 Comment »

While there are a good number of decent Content Management Systems out there these days we use WordPress for one simple reason, unless your website requires a full custom site build (which can get expensive fast), WordPress is one of the best out of the box CMS solutions. Once known as the “Best Blogging Platform”, it has quickly grown to become a complete and full-fledged CMS with an incredibly large development community that is continually working to make it even better.

With little to no HTML knowledge, the average user can log in to their WordPress Dashboard to make edits and changes on their website themselves using a built in WYSIWYG editor that is easier than constructing a document in Microsoft Word. They can upload photos to pages and galleries, add video, write and add new pages, edit existing pages, write and post blog entries, update important information such as location and business hours, and the list goes on.

We have yet to find anything that we can’t do with a custom WordPress site. From full eCommerce cart solutions to simple forms, we still haven’t found a functionality that WordPress can’t handle easily as well as other CMS’s such as Drupal, Joomla, or DotNetNuke*, no matter what anyone says. So far it seems that if you can dream it, WordPress can do it. But lucky for you, in the event that WP can’t support your project, we have strong relationships with some of the best coders in the valley. Which means, no matter what the solution needs to be, we can make it happen

———————————————————————————————————————————————–

*Side note - We’ve done research into local competitors offering these other CMS platforms (some even use WP) and have found that most (not all) don’t actually build “custom designed” web sites,  especially the Joomla developers. In fact, we haven’t found a single company using Joomla that doesn’t just take a pre-designed template and do nothing more than swap out the logo with your own and possibly change the link colors or background color if you’re lucky. (This doesn’t mean there aren’t custom Joomla designers out there, we just haven’t found one yet.) These are also companies who actually call themselves web DESIGN agencies. While it’s true that Joomla templates have some very attractive designs, they aren’t custom designs created specifically for you and look like a thousand other sites on the internet. So when you are looking for who you want to work with to design your awesome new web site, be sure to ask a lot of questions to know what you are getting, and what you are NOT getting.

Dave Redford – Down This Road Before [Free Download]

January 30th, 2011 Posted in Uncategorized | No Comments »

Original line-up of The Red Fords and only official photo shoot.

Back around the turn of the century I had a short lived Alt. Country band called The Red Fords. The band never managed to get into the studio, however I had some recording time at Audio Lab that I had worked out in trade so I decided to take some of the songs I had written for the band and put them out as a solo EP. The entire thing was DIY with of course the help of Steve Fulton at Audio Lab who mixed, mastered, and burned the discs for me. Album art (which I can no longer find) was printed at Kinko’s and I cut and put the the discs together myself. I think there is actually only about 50 hard copies of it in existence. I can barely stand to listen to this myself anymore, but thought it might be amusing to give away as a free download. It could provide a few giggles at least to those of you who know me. Anyhow, without further ado… DOWNLOAD THE ALBUM HERE.

Crazy Dancing Guy – iMovie Testing

September 9th, 2010 Posted in Uncategorized | No Comments »

Saw this guy downtown dancing on the corner a few weeks back and was far too amused not to video tape him. So when I finally purchased iMovie to edit video on my iPhone 4, I decided this was as good a video as any to play around and get familiar with the slick new app. Nothing fancy, just added my own soundtrack. Enjoy!
